HELLO AND WELCOME TO AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE!!!
We are just entering week 7 of the 2015-2016 Dream Academy school year. Students have learned the ASL Manual Alphabet, Beginning Numbers, Days of the Week, Times of Day, Colors and a few family, community, and communication signs. Ask your student to show you a few!!
The main text we are using to learn how to communicate with Sign Language this year is "1000 Words to Sign". The book is in dictionary format with photos and directions on " How to" with ASL, with a DVD back-up demo for most signs in the book. Students are currently working on all of the signs found in Sections A and B.
On the theory side of class, we are learning about non verbal communication, and alternate ways to communicate. Students have created personal communication boards, have participated in simulated blindness and other labs to emphasize learning by using vision and touch. We are beginning to study a few key people with disabilities in history such as Helen Keller and Christy Brown, and plan to have a guest speaker in class before Thanksgiving Break. More to come later.
Preparing for the Holidays: Students will be creating SING AND SIGN Presentations. Please send me your song suggestions, and maybe we can put a small group of students together to work on creating a sign language translation for your song.
GREAT STUDENT PARTICIPATION MAKES FOR A FANTASTIC CLASS!!!!
